Tactile Fit For Stakes “The Press' Special Service INVERCARGILL Dec. 16. The Derby winner, Tactile, ran a slashing trial for the New Zealand Champion Stakes at Ashburton on Boxing Day when he won the Northern Southland Free-for-all, the feature event at the Northern Southland Trotting Club’s annual nontotahsator meeting at Balfour on Saturday It was the first time the Hal Tryax colt had been produced in other than a restricted age race but the manner in which he dealt with a pacer of the class of Light Mood, which to on the fringe of New Zealand Cup class, left no doubts about Tactile’s potential. Light Mood tried to win all the way but Tactile bad him well covered half a furlong out Tactile, which was well handled by J. Bond, ran the mile and a quarter on the grass in 2min 42sec—s shade be’ter than a 2nun IQsec mile rate. Light Mood carried the field along at a mart dip. the first mile in 2min 10 3-ssec, and Tactile came home his last mile in better than 2nuo 6sec and Itos final half in Imin 2 3-ssec. It was phenomenal run. He has trained on since his Derby success The first four place-getters —Tactile. Light Mood. Jack Super and Holland Step—will race at Ashburton, Addington and Auckland over the holidays. Tactile and Jack Super will be at both Ashburton and Auckland Highland Step wiU be at Auckland and Light Mood at Addington, at New Year. All four ran worthwhile trials D. J. Townley will drive both Tactile and Jack Super in their northern engagements.
