Motor Racing A. Shelly Wins Ohakea Gold Star Trophy Race
(N.Z. Press Association) PALM. NORTH, Dec. 18. The Ohakea Gold Star Championship trophy race on Saturday was won by A. Shelly (Lotus 2.5) after his two main rivals, A. Hyslop (Cooper) and C. Amon (Cooper) had retired. Hyslop's Cooper developed gearbox trouble and a bolt broke in the steering of Amon's car. Hyslop took the lead from the first lap, with Shelly close behind. Hyslop retired on die eleventh. The first six placings were A. Shelly, J. Palmer, W. J. Thomasen, R. H. Smith, R. J. Flowers and J. C. N. Histed. The 30-mile saloon car event was run in three classes, and there were- 37 competitors. The over ■ 2001 c.c. class was won by the Christchurch driver, R. J. N. Archibald (Jaguar 3.8), after A. Mcßeath in a similar car spun on the first lap. L. P. Harris rolled his Humber 80 when he approached the hairpin too fast, but he was not hurt. D. Marwood's Humber 80 lost its front wheel and finished up in the hay bales. Again the driver was not injured. The production sports car race, of 30 miles, also provided excitement. P. T. Galpin (Jaguar XKl5O> took the lead from R. J. Read (Jaguar XKI2O) at the start. Read had trouble with a loose bonnet apd then spun when his brakes locked, allowing G. B. Miles (Morgan) into second place. On the twelfth lap Miles passed Galpin and held the lead to the finish. Results were:— Production Sports Car Scratch Race (ten miles).—Under 1800 c.c.; A G.
