HAWKE CUP Batsmen Give Nelson A Fighting Chance

“The Press" Special Service

NELSON, December 16.

Hutt Valley and Nelson will enter the final day of their Hawke Cup match tomorrow with the scales evenly balanced. Hutt led by 113 runs on the first innings but at stumps yesterday Nelson had fought back admirably to lead by 219 with four wickets intact.

Nelson must win outright to retain the cup. so the last day’s play is invested with unusual interest. A feature of the play yesterday was the batting of the top Nelson batsmen, and especially the innings of the Central Districts representative, B. E. Congdon. He scored his 87 runs in 95 minutes; an innings full of fine shots. The openers, and also Central Districts players. L. B. Reade and G. E. Lowans, moved into the Hutt attack from the start and gave the innings a firm basis. I. B. Leggat hit a most aggressive—and at times rural--46 and I. E. Wyatt was unbeaten at stumps with 67. Leggat took 20 off one over from B. D. Morrison and Wyatt made 18 off the last over of the day from G. T. McConnell.

Nelson’s great comeback stirred the local crowd as the side came so firmly back into the game. The Hutt fielding deteriorated after a most wearying day and catches were put down frequently. In the morning session the college boy. R. E. Redmond, continued his long but for Hutt invaluable innings. His overnight 42 became 77 before he was out. The 17-year-old Redmond batted with great confidence yesterday and with entertaining contributions coming from R. W Blair and A. R. Taylor, Hutt Valley was out for 242. Blair's batting was excellent. It is expected that Nelson will bat for an hour tomorrow morning and endeavour to force the pace to give themselves sufficient runs and sufficient time to save the game.
