SHARK NEAR BEACH

Catch By Skindiver (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Dec. 16. A 280-pound bronze whaler shank, 9ft sin in length, was speared by a Wellington skindiver, Mr F. B. Rogers, about 200 yards from the beach at Makara Bay, Wellington, this afternoon. Sharks of this type are reported to have made vicious attacks on fishermen's nets in New Zealand waiters and are known to be dangerous to man on Australian coasts. Mr Rogers, who is a member of the Wellington Underwater Club, had already caught several moki fish and had these on his line when he saw the dark shape of the shark, magnified by the water, glide about I Oft under him. “I turned and shot him,” said Mr Rogers. “I have about 130 feet of line on my reel and the shark ran it right out.” After the shark had been towed to the beach and cut open, it was found to have 17 baby sharks inside. Mr Rogers’ spear had entered through one side of the head and emerged through one corner of the mouth.
