CHRIST’S COLLEGE PRIZE-GIVING

Although neither the boys nor the staff of Christ’s College had been idle during the year, he had sometimes felt a lack of a real urgency to get on, of the excitement of new discoveries, of the whole-hearted wish to excel, said Mr H. R. Hornsby in his last report as headmaster at the annual prize-giving ceremony at the college last evening. He said he would hate to feel the blighting influence of complacency was making headway, and that the capacity to feel intensely, to think critically and to work with vigour for things of real value had been lost. "Is it adversity that alone can produce these feelings?” Mr Hornsby asked. “I hope not, for it is very easy here in our security, in our fine buildings and society based on tradition, to forget that man can only progress by honest toil, and by believing passionately in a course or an ideal,” he said.
