Church Unity
Sir, —The following, from the brochure of the official history of Durham Castle. England, may be of interest to your readers. Of the portraits hanging round the Great Hall, it says: “One of the most interesting is Dr George Townsend, who, in 1850, accompanied by his w'ife, succeeded in getting an interview with Pope Pius IX in order to persuade him to summon a council of all Christian sects with the object of reuniting Christianity. He spoke in Latin but with an English pronunciation which the Pope could not understand. So Mrs Townsend, an excellent linguist, translated her husband's La>tin into Italian.”—Yours, etc, LJ.M. November 29. 1962.
