INSECTICIDE TRIALS
Toxic Residue Tests Planned (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 30. Trials with pyrethrum, claimed to be an efficient natural insecticide which does not leave toxic residues in meat or dairy produce, are to be carried out at the Ruakura and the Waliaceville animal research stations. This decision by the Department of Agriculture is the result of a visit to New Zealand by Mr G. D. Glyrme Jones, a Welsh entomologist who is now technical executive to the Pyrethrum Bureau, a producer organisation with headquarters in Kenya. Mr Jones’ visit comes at a time when New Zealand is facing an acute problem over insecticides and when a large number of materials have been banned because' there is a danger of them 1 leaving residues in animal; products. He said in Auckland today ! that he had discussed pyrethrum with the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys) and that the Minister had shown considerable interest.
A good deal of enthusiasm had also been shown by New Zealand producer boards and freezing companies. Mr Jones said the Department of Agriculture had promised to carry out trials to examine the full potential of pyrethrum and its possible use in New Zealand for the control of external parasites such as biting flies on cattle and blowflies on sheep.
