Keeping Track
The first contribution to a Town Hall fund was made in 1948 by the Christchurch Harmonic Society, which had given £lOO, said Sir James Hay at last evening's annual meeting of the Christchurch Civic Music Council “Have you got track of that £100?” he asked the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), amid laughter. The Music Council had been thrilled by the progress on the town hall project this year, Sir James Hay said. Canterbury He felt quite angry with the Canterbury branch of the society, said Mr D. R. Daniels, the secretary-general of the British Commonwealth Society at a meeting of the branch last evening. He was from Canterbury, Kent, and a university was being formed there. Naturally, people wished to call it Canterbury University. However, there had been opposition from a certain quarter, tj a compromise had been made. The university would be known as Kent University at Canterbury, said Mr Daniels.
Clean-Up Drive The Christchurch Junior Chamber will conduct a clean-up drive today. All residents in the area bounded by Linwood avenue, Buckleys road, Pages road. Bickerton street, and Avonside drive have the opportunity of having any rubbish picked up free of charge if they leave it at their gates. Scout Camps During the Christmas holidays scout troops and patrols will be practising and preparing for the area campers’ cup competition which is to be held at the Shipley’s road camp site on March 2 and 3. The competition will be sponsored by the Kauri District Association and will be a prelude to the New Zealand camping competition which will be held at Tatum park on April 13 and 14. The winning patrol wil? represent Canterbury at Taitum park. Air scouts will attend an air scouts camp at Wheniuaipai. the R.N.Z.A.F station, from January 8 to January 14, and on December 26 the Dominion Rover climbing course will be held at Timaru.
Vaccine Figures The two city clinics still dispensing oral poliomyelitis vaccine issued second doses to 2639 persons yesterday j This brings the number of persons receiving the second dose to 117.403. The Health Department advises from now on only the Manchester street (Mass X-ray) clinic will be dispensing the doses, and it will be open from 9 a m. to 4.30 p.m. each weekday. It will continue to issue vaccine until December 18. Ladder Sold The old Tillings-Steven.s extension ladder of the Christchurch Fire Brigade was sold for £65 10s to a metal-dealing firm by the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board yesterday. The price was one of two tenders for the ladder. The other was £26 10s. "No other brigade wants the ladder,” sand the chairman (Mr W. R. Campbell). “We are getting rid of it; it is only an obstruction around the place,” Mr E. R. McGrath said.
Royal Patron The death of the former Queen of the Netherlands. Princess Wilhelmina, ended a link between the Abel Tasman National Park board and the Netherland Royal Household. Princess Wilhelmina was the board’s patron. She accepted the nomination for the office when the board was formed in 1942 On Thursday the board decided to record ' ,h regret the death of its patron and send messages of sympathy to the Royal Household A letter will be sent to Queen Juliana requesting her to become the board’s patron—(PA.) Driving Contest More than 40 young drivers will be arriving in Auckland from many parts of the country tom'rrow to take part in the national teen - age “roadeo”” being organised by Auckland Junior Chamber of Commerce this week-end The drivers, aged between 16 and 21, qualified for the national finals by winning, district ‘‘roadeos’’—(PA)
Fishing Rivers All rivers except the Rakaia, which was discoloured. were reported clear and fishable by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society yesterday.
