Magistrates Court Youth Admits Six Charges Of Converting Cars

Graeme Edward Crowley, aged 17, an apprentice carpenter, pleaded guilty to six changes of unlawfully converting cars and one of attempted theft. He was represented by Mr P. G. HIM.

Crowley was convicted and remanded on baiii tn December 7. Suppression of name was refused.

The conversion charges concerned cans taken from city streets between July 13 and November 2. Sergeant Read said one had been driven to Waiimate and back and another to Ashburton. BORSTAL TRAINING Borstal training was imposed on Noeilne Mary McLaughlin, aged 17, when she appeared on two charges of being idle and disorderly, in that she had insufficient lawful means of support. She was appearing for sentence on one charge, which referred to October 29, and she pleaded guilty to another similar charge relating to November 28. Of the charge ot November 28, Sergeant Read said said the accused and a 16-year-old youth were apprehended in a Timaru street. On seven charges of theft and one of being a minor drinking tn a public place, a 17-year-old youth, whose name was suppressed. was remanded to December 7 pending a probation officer's report. Bail was

allowed. The youth, represented by Miss C. Fleming, pleaded guilty to all charges. On the evenings of October 6, 8 and 9. the accused, with two friends, siphoned petrol, ranging in amounts from half a gallon to one gallon, from the tanks of six vehicles parked in city and New Brighton streets. On October 9, when petrol was stolen from three cars the Souths cut a length from a garen hose and used this to siphon the fuel, said Sergeant Read. The accused had also been seen drinking beer in the north car park in Marine parade on October 6. he said. FIREWORKS IN PUBLIC PLACE Attracted by a scream from the women’s toilets at the North New Brighton car park on November 5, Sergeant J. M. McDonald said he went to the toilet and found a youth throwing crackers into the toilet through a rear grill. Alan James Jamieson, aged 18, a labourer, did not appear to face a charge of setting off fireworks in a public place. He was convicted and fined £2. TRESPASS Although asked by the owner of the property and the police to leave the premises several times, Ivan Husband, aged 35, married, a telegraphist, had refused said Senior-Sergeant G. M. Cleary. Husband admitted a charge of trespassing at 127 Marriotts road. North Brighton, about 1020 p.m. on November 29. Husband, who was drunk at the time, had fought the owner of the property and his two sons. He had still refused to leave when the police arrived, and had been arrested, said Senior-Sergeant Cleary. Husband, who had no previous convictions was fined £7 10s.

STOLE WALLET After he had given Richard James Thomas Finlay, aged 19. a workman, a ride in his car to Kalkoura on November 27, a motorist had found his wallet and £23 in money missing, said Senior-Sergeant Cleary. Finlay, who was not represented by counsel, pleaded guilty to the charge of theft and was remanded to December 7 for sentence. UNLAWFULLY ON RACECOURSE "Mug cops” would not keep him off racecourses and he would be back, Lyall Dudley Cay. aged 23, a workman, told Detective-Sergeant B. T. Mitten as he was being escorted from Addington Racecourse on November 6, the detective told the Court. He said he found Grav watching the trotting cup.
