NATIONAL BOAT SHOW TO BE HELD IN CITY
A nataionail boat and caravan. show will be held in Christxjhundh next year. This was announced by the commodore of the Canterbury Rclass Squadron (Mr A- W. Shield*). The stow wiM be organised by the squadron, the New Brighton Power Boat Club, and tlhe Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association in oonjunction with the Canterbury Agraoufliburad. and Pastoral Association, lit will be held in Canterbury Court, the exhibition building at the Addington Show Grounds which is owned jointly by the two associations. Mr Shields said that the stow would be held for 10 days or two weeks in October, 1963. Ail waiter sports would be catered for, including surf life-oaving, rowing and canoeing, wiater-eka-ing and possibly angling. Commercial and sporting displays on the widest possible front would be organised. Artificial Lake A proposed feature of the show is an artificiai lake to be constructed art the show grounds. It will be above ground and held in a huge wooden frame lined with plastic sheeting. The surface will be large enough for races with small yachts and for rod-and-line demonstrations. The power boat club conducted a small show in the King Edward Barracks last year; and its organiser (Mr E. Peverill, secretary of the club) was elected organiser of the 1963 show. The national show was the idea of the yachting body, which discovered that the power boat club was considering a similar project when it initiated arrangements. “I am very pleased they have come in; I think we can work well together," commented Mr Shields. ‘Their experience will be invaluaible and their branch of water sport wtUi give much better coverage.” Mir Shields emphasised that the R-class Squadron would
not be retaining ooe-thaid of the show’s proceeds for itself. “We only need so much; after that, we will ddstribute the surplus to yacht clubs and owners’ associations in proportion to the work they put into the show,” he said. A six-man committee, comprising two repneseotarttives of each of the three participating interests, will conduct the show. A draft budget, to enable costing to be carried out, will be prepared by Mr Peverill and the secretary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. T. Alston).
