(Special Correspondent NZJ’JL.)

PERTH, November 30.

The New Zealand sprint champion, W. T. Johnston, repeated his effort of the last Games in Cardiff when he took second place and the silver medal in the 10-mile race on the final night of the track cycling.

G. F. Wright, of Wellington, another member of New Zealand’s three-man team, finished fourth only about two feet away from winning a bronze medal. The other New Zealander, A. Candy, finished in the main bunch. In a thrilling last lap four riders crashed, but the New Zealanders kept clear of trouble for Johnston and Wright to figure in the final tremendous sprint Johnston, Wright and Candy were content to ride well back in the bunched field of 21 riders for most of the race.

Wright went to the front to set the pace for two or three short bursts and Candy made one attempt to break away from the field, but Johnston was never in the leading group until he turned on his powerful final sprint It was just not powerful enough to catch D. J. Adams, one of the Australian team, which had battled with the English riders throughout the race. Johnston just headed J. Clarey, of England. Candy made his first forward move with 16 laps left. He was joined by D R. Hunter, a Rhodesian, and they shot away to lead by a quarter of a lap. But with 10 left, they decided to rejoin the main bunch.

Johnston moved up to third with seven left and a lap later Wright raced to the front with Jackson, the aggressive Englishman. Johnston made a valiant attempt to catch Adams on the outside in the punishing final sprint, but the Australian held him off.
