Attack On Elderly Woman In Flat

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 25. An elderly, frail woman is in Auckland Hospital tonight suffering from bruises and severe shock after being brutally beaten about the face by a man who forced his way into her pensioner flat and demanded money. The woman, Mrs Annie Georgeson, aged 74, a widow, was admitted to hospital with black eyes, severe bruising to the cheeks and nose and an injured jaw.

Her condition tonight was reported to be “fairly sick but improving.” Mrs Georgeson lives alone in a State pensioner flat at 56 Denny avenue. Mount Roskill. Today her son. Mr R. G. Georgeson, of Gtahuhu, said that his mother had been expecting him to call. She later told him that she had heard the sound of a car and had gone to the gate. A car was parked art the kerb but it was not his and she had gone inside again. Police believe the man followed her inside or came to her door a few minutes larter. Mrs L. A. Kingston, a pensioner, who occupies the adjoining flat of the double unit, believed she must have heard something because about that time she became anxious for Mrs Georgeson.

She went to Mrs Geoigeson’s door and called: “Are you all right?” The flat was in darkness and there was no reply. She tried the door but the lock was sndbbed on the inside. She went back to her own flart but was still worried and a few minutes later went outside again. She saw a light on in Mrs Georgeson’s bedroom and again called out: “Are you all right?” The light went out. The door flew open and a man ran past Mrs Kingston into the darkness of the street and disappeared. Mrs Kingston found Mrs Georgeson lying in a dazed and shaken condition. The bedroom had been partly ransacked.

An ambulance was called to take Mrs Georgeson to hospital.
