GAOLED FOR A MONTH
Men Assaulted Constable (NX. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Nov. 20. Two men who threw a keg of beer at a constable were each gaoled for a month by Mr M. B. Scully, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington today. They were Cecil Hohepa. aged 21, a slaughterman, and Daniel Ngatai, aged 20, a truck driver. Both pleaded guilty. Sergeant R. A. Knight said that a constable was called to investigate a complaint of wilful damage and was knocked to the ground by an unknown person. He got to his feet, but was then struck by Hohepa. Ngatai. Hohepa and another person then kicked the constable when he was on the ground and threw a keg of beer at him. It spilt over his uniform. "Die constable managed to get back to his police car and radioed for assistance. His attackers made off and were located three days later. At first they denied all knowledge of the matter but after being identified, admitted the offence.
Asked for an explanation, Hohepa said he saw no reason for offering an excuse. The Magistrate told them: “This was a brutal assault which might have resulted in you appearing on a much more serious charge. Constables have a hard enough iob eareying out their duty without being assaulted."
