“It is heartening to see that, in spite of award increases and the 2J per cent, general wage order. the operating deficiency so far for the year is £1322 less than that for last year,” said Mr A. J. Woodwand, presenting the finance committee’s report to a meeting of the Transport Board yesterday. For the four weeks ended October 7. the revenue was £46,415, £143 less than in the corresponding period last year. Operating expenses were £49.989. leaving a net loss of £3574. which was £1163 more than in the same period in 1961. Mr Woodward said that the deficiency to date was £ 86,884, compared with £88.216 last vear—a decrease of £1332.
Revenue from the special buses running to the races and the show was £73 19s less than that last year, Mr Woodward said. The special buses for the races—on Tuesday at Addington and Wednesday and Saturday at Riccarton—produced revenue of £769. £7 less than last year. The buses for two days of the Show produced £1067. which was £67 less than last year, said Mr Woodward.
Mr J. R. Smith New Chairman
Mr J. R. Smith was elected chairman of the Christchurch Transport Board at a meeting of the board yesterday. Mr Smith was nominated by Mr E. J. Bradshaw, the former chairman. Mr Bradshaw, who had been nominated by Mr R. H. Stillwell, declined nomination. He said that his other commitments did not allow him to devote the time necessary for the duties of the chairman of the board.
Mr Bradshaw teas elected deputy-chairman on the nomination of Mr Smith.
