BRABIN TRIAL
Town In Sound Position
Town was in a very sound position after the first day’s play in a Brabin tournament trial against a Country eleven at Hagley oval yesterday. Country was all out for 117 and when rain stopped play at 4.40 p.m. Town had scored 165 for the loss of only two wickets. A steady and unbeaten 72 from the Timaru Boys’ High School opening batsman, D. R. Mclnnes, contributed substantially to Country’s modest total. The pitch was soft, slow and taking turn, and M. G. Lester, with his left-arm leg-spinners, exploited it exceedingly well to fiinfsh with six for 36. W. Thomson began Town's innings with a flurry of forcing diets, but at 27 the side lost both Thomson and R. Gearry to successive balls from B. R Taylor. A splendid unbeaten third wicket partnership, however. between T. Marshall and J. W. Burtt, restored confidence to the batting and took the innings well past Country’s total. Burtt played some superb shots backward of point and Marshall, too, batted attractively and well against a no more than adequate attack. Scores:— COUNTRY First Innings D. R, Melnnes, not out .. 72 L.
