SPEARFISHING CATCH

Eight Swimmers Take 786 A lb (N.Z. Press Association) VHANGAREI. Nov. 19. Eight members of the Reefcombers’ Underwater Club (Auckland) set what must be rated a New Zealand record for a day’s spearfishing when they captured 786 jib of edible fish in Northland waters on Saturday. Operating from the big game fishing boat Te Kowhai, they captured 22 kingfish (heaviest 601 b, average 321 b) and two hapuka (2511 b and 591 b).

Scene of operations was The Pinnacles, south of the Poor Knights’ Islands and about 14 miles off the coast from Tutukaka. “It was a real circus at ti es," said W. Baldwin, the club captain. At one stage five big kingfish were taken together. “When anybody shot a kingfish other big fish swarmed to the scene.” he said.

A killer whale was sighted down below. The fishermen formed a “wing-tip” formation, but wisely used it in retreat.
