Obituary MR D. T. SMITH
Mr David Thomas Smith, well known in Christchurch for his evangelical and charitable work for more than 50 years, died in Christchurch yesterday. He was 90 Mr Smith was bom In Siddal, Yorkshire, and after training in the wool trade came to Australia and New Zealand in 1897 as a woolbuyer representing the family firm of David Smith and Company Ltd. Early this century Mr Smith retired from the wool trade to undertake undenominational evangelical work. He founded the Richmond Mission, North Avon road, and his work tn this field became widely known in New Zealand and overseas Mr Smith’s friends included leading figures in evangelical work throughout the world and when Pastor Niemoller visited Christchurch recently he made a *pecia J point of visiting Mr Smith For more than 35 years Mr Smith and his wife were official visitors at Paparua Prison, and he conducted an organisation for the guidance and religious support of released prisoners
Mr Smith is survived by his wife and two sons, Mr J. Roysmith and Mr C. C Smith, both of Christchurch
