20-Miie Road Race Winner Collapses From Heat

A varied programme of athletic, cycling, wood chopping and national dancing events provided excellent entertainment in brilliantly fine weather for a large number of spectators at the annual Waikari sports on Saturday. Additional interest was given the cycling by the inclusion of two North Canterbury championships, while the national dancing competitions included a provincial championship. However, the hot weather exacted a price. In the 20mile road race, the winner, M. Gosney, collapsed in a semiexhausted state just after the finish and 11 of the 18 starters withdrew after two or three laps of the five-mile block. Fastest time, and third place, was gained by W. R. Green with 2hr 6min 46sec. Three Sprint Titles J. B. Newlove gained an unusual distinction for a handicap meeting of winning the three senior sprint events, and I his successes gained him the Sutherland challenge cup for ■ most points in the flat races. I Second in this section was J. jc. Gordon, who was runner-up in the 880 yards and mile. The Harry Saundercock memorial challenge cup for most points in the field events was won by R. Syme. Most proficient in tossing the caber was a Waikari competitor, D. Lang, who hurtled it out to 36ft Tin. Lang's success enabled him to tie with C. Twose for the cup awarded to the district competitor gaining most points. Competition was keen amongst the younger competitors from the district. Only one point separated the first three for the Doug. Lang chal- | lenge cup awarded to the secondary school pupil from the I district gaining most points. (The winner was Miss R. Adlington, from Miss I. Baker and A. Harrison, who shared second : place. Gaining most points in ; the national dancing, Miss Lynne Espiin won the N. Atkinson Cup. Wood Chopping I Added variety was given the i programme by the inclusion of ; wood chops, the first time for i many years. The demonstrations by members of the Christchurch and Cheviot axemen’s I clubs. Included some first-class exponents, some of whom had been chosen to chop before the Queen at' the Festival of Sport in Dunedin in 1954. The wood chops are expected to be added to the programme as open competitions next year. R. Harrison snatched a win in the North Canterbury mile cash cycling championship, just heading oft J. Swanson. The time was 2min 36sec Winner of the two-mile amateur championship was T. Cameron in smin 25.25ec The Gillie Callum under 12 provincial championship was won by Miss Judith Marks.
