METHODIST FUNCTION
Garden Party
Abandoned
Because of Saturday’s unsettled weather, the Methodist conference garden party planned to be held in the grounds of the Papanui Methodist children's home was replaced by a social gathering held in the Papanui High School hall. The conference president (the Rev. R. Thornley) gave a brief address, and a programme of items was presented. Visitors were later taken on a tour of inspection of
the home. Oh Saturday evening a tea was held at Deaconess House in Latimer square, for deaconesses attending the conference. Mr and Mrs Thornley were guests of honour.
After the tea a deaconess dedication service was held in the Durham street Methodist Church. Misses Edna Jenkin and Graewyn Hammond, both of Hamilton, were dedicated as deaconesses for the Methodist Church’s Maori mission service. The service was conducted by Mr Thornley, and the Rev. A K. Petch preached the sermon.
After the service there was a half-hour choral programme by the Durham street Church choir. Mr Melville Lawry was the conductor.
