Unemployed Fewer

Last month, 158 men and 35 women had been placed in employment by the Labour Department in Christchurch, said the district superintendent of the department (Mr C. P. Collins) yesterday. At the end of the month 88 men had been registered as unemployed. 73 of them drawing unemployment benefit, compared with 127 men unemployed (93 on unemployment benefit) at the end of September. Seventeen women were registered as unemployed at the end of last month (12 drawing unemployment benefit) compared with 21 women unemployed (11 on benefit) at the end of September. Mr Collins said that with seasonal work coming into full swing employment prospects were good. Th* special work obtained by the Labour Department with the Catchment and Nassella Tussock Boards had ceased. Under this arrangement, the men working for the Nassella Tussock Board had been transported to and from their work daily by bus from Christchurch. The board still needed single men.
