WEST MELTON SCHOOL

In 1871 a small single-room school was opened ait West Melton, 14 miles from Ohristeburoh- ’n 1963, and In the original room the school will celebrate its ninety-second anniversary The school opened with a roll of 41—18 boys and 23 girls—and a second room was added in 1883. A school house, built at the same time as the first room and demolished in 1955, was replaced four years Later by the present school house About 1000 pupils have passed through the school. The present roll of 37 is close to that at the start. Early pupils included Mr Henry Holland, father of Sir Sidney Holland, and Mr A. Drayton, who was a founder of Drayton-Jones, Ltd. The school has had 22 chairmen and 21 head teachers. The name West Melton was chosen by Mr H. Trickett, an early settler, after his home in Yorkshire, England. At one stage the township boasted a combined drapery and grocery store, a bacon factory, a wheelwright's 4hop. and a flour mill, but times have changed. x The anniversary committee, under Mr John Coleman, is planning three days of celebrations. including a ball, assembly, banquet, and church service.
