Common Market
Sir,—Surely it would be wise if the Government of New Zealand spent a small sum of money for thinkers on the strange difficulties that this country now has to face. If New Zealand developed the idea of offering the United Kingdom room for a British State for 1.000.000 people in New Zealand; it could pave the way for British States of 3.000.000 each iin Canada, Australia and Rhodesia. The present (defence bill in Great Britain is £1721 million. Fancy what la few million pounds could
do in building new States with abundant food, clothing and shelter. Two things will give New Zealand power: a big aluminium industry, and a compost society, plan to harvest seaweed from the ocean to build up land fertility.—Yours, etc., L. C. WALKER. September 18, 1962. Sir,—How refreshing to read Mr Upham’s pungent opinion on the effects on New Zealand if Britain joins the E.E.C. What a wealth of good, old-fashioned, everyday common sense it reveals at a time when wild and fantastic speculation is rife.—Yours, etc., THREE CHEERS. September 18, 1962.
