Waltham Bridge

Sir,—lt is to be hoped that the embankment being formed between Ferry road and the Heathcote end of the new tunnel will later be tidied up and planted. I would hate to think that some day they will take on the appearance of the approaches to the Waltham overhead bridge and areas adjacent. The view from the bridge looking west is a real “bottler.” The only bright spot is what bus passengers call “Lake McAlpine” with its sea-bird population. What a sadly neglected appearance the rest of the area has assumed over the years! I suggest our city fathers gather on the bridge and have a “screw” at the surroundings generally, and then see what can be done to remove this eyesore. The building of the new station has had nothing to do with the mess. Most of it has been there for years.—Yours, etc., S.A.A. August 22, 1962. [The acting district engineer of the Railways Department (Mr J. C. Sandford) said: “The area referred to will be developed in the near future.”]
