VISIT TOO LATE

Board’s Trees Felled

The Christchurch Drainage Board’s construction committee went to Bromley recently to inspect an area in which it had 400 to 500 trees planted. It found that between 150 and 200 had been cut down and left where they fell, and tba-t the felling continued as late as the night before the committee meeting. When it reported this to the board last evening, the committee said that in March it had considered a report on the area, next to the treatment works on the corner of Bexley road and Bridge street. At the time it was recommended that the area be left as it was, but the chairman (Mr R. C. Neville) commented that he had seen a newspaper report after a yacht race that the board would be asked to cut down the trees. As a result the committee had agreed to consider the matter further No official approach had been made by yachtsmen and there had appeared to be no urgency, the committee said Acting on the committee’s recommendation, the board placed the complaint In the hands of the police and agreed to take no action if there was a formal request for the board to cut down the trees.
