SPLIT WITH F.O.L.
Rubber Unions’
Attitude
The council of the Northern (Auckland) and Canterbury unions of rubber workers will make a statement today on the decision of the Wellington Rubber Workers’ Union to leave the Federation of Labour. The secretary of the council (Mr T. C. F. Fletcher, of Christchurch) said last night that he was conferring with the president (Mr I. Thompson. of Auckland). The Auckland and Canterbury unions have a total membership of about 1100 The Wellington union has about 300. On Thursday, the secretary of the Wellington union (Mr A. J. Neary) announced that a secret ballot showed 193 were for disaffiliation and 79 against. The Canterbury and Auckland unions are affiliated with the F.O.L. There has been no suggestion of the Christchurch union leaving the F.O.L The view of the Christchurch union executive is that the Wellington union, by deciding to disaffiliate, had done New Zealand rubber workers a disservice by upsetting plans for federation of the three unions and collective bargaining for all rubber workers. The Christchurch union has about 650 members and Auckland about 450.
