Obituary MR G. GREENWAY
The death occurred suddenly in Christchurch yesterday of Mr George Greenway. an officer of the Department of Agriculture for 39 years who was well known throughout the country. For 20 years Mr Greenway had been district executive officer of the department in Christchurch, witih a district extending over the northern half of the South Island from the Waitaki river. He was due to retire in Mav.
Mr Greenway, who was 56, was born in Weybridge Surrey, and came to New Zealand with his parents when he was 14.
His whole worKing life was spent in the administration division of the department. He joined the department in Christchurch as a cadet 39 years ago. and he served in Invercargill Auckland. Wellington, and Dunedin before returning to Christchurch to become district executive officer. In this capacity he had to contend with the difficulties of ti e
war years when staff wr.s short, and he was also associated with the services' vegetable production scheme under which vegetables were grown for New Zealand and American forces.
In his younger days Mr Greenway was a keen rower and member of the Avon Club, and he also played Rugby football for the Sydenham club. He was also a member of the Royal Society. Mr Greenway was on leave when he became ill yesterday morning. He is survived by his wife and one daughter. Mrs Janet Anderson. of New Brighton
