'Old Men Of Europe ’ Creating War Risk’

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, August 31. The “Daily Mail” today accused the “old men of Europe who learn nothing and forget nothing” of once more placing the world in danger by war by opposing Britain’s entry into the Common Market.

The "Dally Mail’’ said: "We wrote yesterday about the old men of Europe, the old men who decide the fate of the young men. The young men of Britain. America, the Continent, the young men of the Commonwealth who have twice come streaming across the seas to spill their blood in the Old World's soil. "Must this, or something like it hapoen again? It could if we heeded those who say Britain must have nothing to do with Europe. “They belong to those who. blind and deaf to the lessons of history, would place us in the situation which made those wars inevitable and got this country into the greatest conflicts of the two preceding centuries.” Opponents of Britain’s entry into the market seek even in the soace age. “like nrimitive cultivators to mark the earth out in strips.” the newspaper said. The old men of Europe want “a dominant Germany or France or FrancoGermany. They want Britain to keep out, to compete with Europe and to add to the perils and strains of this stressful world,” it said. The former Foreign Minister and chairman of the West German Christian Democratic Parliamentary Party. Mr Heinrich von Brentano. said in Hamburg last night that he was convinced negotiations for Britain’s entry into the Common Market would be concluded successfully this year. He said he regretted Dr. Adenauer’s televised remarks

had led to misunderstandings with Britain, according to the British United Press. “The good will of all participants does exist." he said. The incident should not be dramatised as the Government and Dr. Adenauer were willing to do everything possible to expand the Common Market by inclusion of Britain.

“This should not happen at any price.” he said, explaining that both parties in the negotiations must make concessions “This is not a matter which can be accomplished in a few weeks, but I do not regard the results of the Brussels talks as a failure.” he said.
