Queen Sirikit Left In White And Brown

Queen Sirikit of Thailand left Christchurch airport for Australia yesterday looking completely recovered from her cold, and wearing her most flattering day-time colour combination pearlwhite and dark brown.

The Queen’s tiny pearlwhite leather pillbox hat was set securely against the early spring breeze on her topknot hairstyle. She wore a dark brown mink coat over her pearl-white open-knit wool dress and matching short jacket, lighter brown accessories, a multi-strand pearl necklace, pearl and diamond ear-rings, and white kid gloves.

Before the official farewell ceremony began, the King and Queen shook hands with members of the entourage who had accompanied them throughout their New Zealand tour.

In this party, assembled in the No. 3 overseas reception room, were Miss B. N. Manning, secretary to the tour director (Mr J. V Meeeh) and Misses J. B. Topsom and B. J Macdonald, shorthand-typists from the Internal Affairs Department The Queen thanked each of them for the work they had done on the tour. Miss Manning said. Princess Vibhavadi Rangsit. the Queen’s lady-in-wanting, and other members of the Royal suite, also took the opportunity of saying goodbye, personally, to New Zealand -

ers whom they had met on the tour.

After a colourful ceremony on the tarmac, the King and Queen said farewell to members of the official New Zealand party, taking their time to acknowledge the bows of the men and the curtsies of the women. At the end .of the line. Their Majesties paused a little Longer with Lady Cobham the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) and Mrs Holyoake, then slowly walked up the gangway of their aircraft. They stood waving at the entrance in reply to the cheers, the Queen giving the radiant smile which has won the hearts of New Zealanders, and the Royal tour had ended.
