Women’s Hockey Unimpressive Wins By Canterbury

(From Our Oum Reporter)

DUNEDIN, Aug. 26.

In two unimpressive performances, Canterbury narrowly defeated Auckland B and Waikato and shared the Section B lead with Maniototo and Otago A, after the first day’s play in the national women's hockey tournament at Dunedin on Saturday. B Makinson played soundly in goal, but Canterbury's defence was not as reliable as usual, this being due largely to the left-back’s policy of playing too far upfield and often being caught out of position by sudden switches of play. J. Murray returned to her bes: form, tackling well and passing accurately. She also covered her partner most effectively. Canterbury's strength lay tn its half-back line of A. Colville. S. Conner and A. Fleete, who provided their forwards with a feast of the ball and were very sound on defence. Comer was the outstanding player on the field in both games, her domination being based upon good trapping, skilful stickwork and sound positional play which enabled her to break up many attacks.

A feature of her game was her extremely accurate passing, often under pressure which was responsible for initiating many attacks. Little Combination

The forwards, however, were not impressive. There was little combination, and poor trapping and passing. allied with the forwards inability to hold the ball, doomed their halves to much unnecessary running They were also slow to link with their defence and failed to move into unmarked positions.

F Kelly was Canterbury’s best forward, her close ball control and fine passing making many openings D Eddy made some fine breaks and combined well with Kelly, and both were always a threat. H Turner made some determined breaks in the afternoon game and her passing to the right was mosi effective.

Canterbury's goals against Auckland were scored by A Giles. H. Walker and F. Kelly (penalty bully), and Walker scored twice against Waikato Results were:—
