Because Linwood beat Christchurch on Saturday, Hornby has won the right to challenge Linwood for the Vivian Cup. In the oneround competition to find a challenger, Ch.ristchu’nch and Linwood have six points each, two points behind Hornby, which has still to play Sydenham. In the second match, Papanui. after losing both its previous matches, had had an easy win over Marist. Vivian Cup points, with games played in parenthesis. 8 <4>. Linwood 6 (5), Christchurch 6 (5). Papanui 4 (5), Marist 4 (5), Sydenham 0 (4).

Results were:— Papanui 20, Marist 3. Linwood 28, Christchurch 2.

PAPANUI V. MARIST Papanui had a convincing victory over Marist. Both felt the efforts of a hard season and

the play was not consistent with the teams’ performances earlier in the season. The match had many penalties, most were awarded against Marist. The side was lethargic and the tackling, at times, was unbelievably poor. Papanui, with its powerful forwards and enterprising backs, made Jhe most of its opportunities and at times showed the high standard which it displayed earlier in the season. In the backs the two teams were fairly evenly matched but it was in the forwards that Papanui held the advantage. For Papanui the front row of G. Turner. G Blackler and <•. Cooper was a powerful one. J. Bond was outstanding in the Papanui backs and further out A. Amer and R. Carey gave good performances. For Marist. J. Donaldson and M. Mohi tried hard. The play of B. Kennedy was a little disappointing after his displays earlier in the season. In the backs. P. Smith ran straight and hard and on defence J. Walshe was an example to his team-mates.

Tries for Papanui were scored by Amer. R. Kingston. Blackler and Bond K Pearce kicked two penalty goals and two conversions. Kennedy scored for Marist.

The referee was Mr J. Beal*.

LINWOOD V. CHRISTCHURCH Linwood was never in any apparent difficulty against Christchurch and after leading 10-2 at half-time played splendid football in the second spell to win easily. Without its captain. R. H. Turton. Christchurch played with little certainty.

i In his first senior game at full-back, N. Adkins, made a fine impression for Linwood. He defended stoutly and ran with determination when he elected to come into the back line. G. J Abercrombie, tno. was a very strong runner in the Linwood line and W. Godfrey gave a useful display at halfback In the forwards M. Carlyle has rarely played better this season and was rewarded for his following up with three grand tries. For Linwood tries were scored by Carlyle (3i, J. Stove. G. Maloney and P. White. White converted four and kicked a penalty goal. R. Hogg kicked a penalty goal for Christchurch. Mr P. Yaxley was the referee.
