Obituary MR G. A. RITCHIE

The death has occurred of Mr George Andrew Ritchie, who concluded 52 years service in type-setting with "The Press" in 1943 He w’as 90

Mr Ritchie joinec. "The Press" in 1891 at the age of 19 as a case hand, when the whole of the newspapei was made up by hand. He was on» of the few hand compositors who adapted themselves to the then revolutionary linotype machines, the first three of which were installed 45 years aeo He continued in the service of the company as a linotype operator until his retirement in 1943.

For 20 years Mr Ritchie was Father of the Chapel, and his knowledge of the newspaper industry was availed of by both management and employees. He was a prominent member of his union and was e'ected a life member ot the New Zealand Printing and Related Trades Union Mr Ritchie is survived by four daughters and three sons.
