FUND FOR STRIKERS
Union Contests Statement
(N.Z. Press Association)
TAURANGA, Aug. 26.
A statement by Mr F. P. Walsh, president of the Federation of Labour, that the fertiliser workers themselves had agreed with the executive of the federation to place surplus money, collected for payment to striking fertiliser workers, in a trust fund is disputed by the secretary of the Bay of Plenty branch of t.he Northern Chemical Workers’ Union (Mr J. Fol’las). “As secretary of this branch I would deny that,” Mr Follas said today. “As far as I know the fertiliser workers were never approached—certainly fertiliser workers in the Bay of Plenty branch were not.
“We consider this money was paid in tp assist the strikers, and we believe it should have been paid out to the strikers or returned to the unions which subscribed it. not held by the federation.”
