Automation In New Tube
(N.Z.P.A.- Reuter—Copyrig ht) LONDON. August 23. A giant new underground railway line to be tunnelled across London may have fu®y-automatic driverless trains.
The new line, the first to be built for 50 years, will be the most modern in the world, with closed circuit television to speed up traffic.
A press conference was told the line would have 11 modern stations in the 11J miles from Victoria in West London, to Walthamstow on the east side of the city. It will have a capacity of 32,000 passengers an hourequal to a 14-lane motorway. Work on the line which has been under consideration since 1949 should begin in September. It is expected to be completed in about six years.
