STANDARDS OF READING
“Urgent Action Needed”
(NZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 24. Because it felt there was need for urgent action to raise the standards of reading in both primary and postprimary schools, the New Zealand Post-Primary Teachers' Association decided today to ask the Department of Education to take realistic steps to ascertain the standard of reading throughout the schools.
In the opinion of the association, it was clear that for many of the pupils in the schools the keynote of their education was frustration and bewilderment.
They were not equipped to take benefit from their schooling. In" all too many cases the true position was not even recognised. It was realised that the correction of the present grim position was linked with questions of numbers, quality and training of the existing teacher force. Correction it was contended must ultimately come from remedying these basic troubles. However, there was in every community at least a small reserve of married women who could undertake part-time work.
