High Standard On First Day

The New Zealand junior boxing championships—the first to be held—began today under the control of the Greymouth Boxing Association in the Army Drill Had. The semi-finals were held in the evening and the finals will bp decided tomorrow night. Competitors had entered from different parts of New Zealand and the standard revealed on the first day was very high. Some of the bouts were won by default, chiefly through competitors having influenza. Results were:—
sst to Sst 51b.—D. Enright (Southland) beat P. Todd (Westport); R. Carstairs (Canterbury) beat R. Ash (Greymouth); J. McGuigan (Waimate) won by default from K. Lawler (Greymouth); S. Brace (Hawke’s Bay) beat B. Forde (Oamaru). Semi-finals: Caretairs beat Enright; Brace beat McGuigan. Sst 51b to sat 101 b.—M. Mohi (Hawke’s Bay) won by default from J. Greenwood (Napier); K. Rice (Hawke’s Bay) beat W. Collins (Westport); T. Eckhold (Otago) beat G. Rice (Hawke's Bay); P. Berge (Otago) beat D. Wood (Greymouth). Semifinals: Mohi beat Rice; Berge beat Eckhold. Sst 101 b to Sst lib—Semifinals: W Doolan (Manawatu) beat M. Forde (Oamaru); F. McKenna (Wanganui) beat C. Lawler (Greymouth). Sst 11b to Sst 61b.—Semi-final: P. Smith (Wanganui) beat D Pope (Oamaru). Sst 61b to Sst 111b—Semifinals: P. O’Donnell (Waimate) beat K. Saunders (Wanganui); A. Donaldson (Southland) beat P. Turnock (Oamaru). Sst Ulb to 7st 21b.—M. Nicol (Manawatu) beat W. Bell (Greymouth); D. Campbell (Westport), L. Rolls (Feilding) and S. Scoles (Otago) won by default Semi-flnals: Nicol beat Campbell; Scoles beat Rolls. 7st 21b to 7st 71b.—Semi-finals: B. Kendall (Canterbury) beat M. Tracey (Hawke's Bay): J Wright (Manawatu) beat R Crosbie (Southland). 7st 71b to 7st 121b.—Semi-final: G. Church (Waimate) beat R Baldwin (Greymouth).
