Mr McAlpine Opens New Fire Station

Christchurch needed the new fire station in Kilmore street so its fire brigade could provide the best and most efficient service for the city, said the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) at the official opening of the fire station yesterday.

The opening ceremony, which was held in the drill yard at the station, was attended by representatives of local bodies and insurance companies and members of Parliament.

Mr McAlpine inspected a guard of honour of 39 firemen and four officers when he entered. Drawn up with the men were eight fire engines.

‘•Fire services are as important as the police and medical services.” Mr McAlpine said. Last year, fire damage amounted to more than £3 million and what was worse. 27 lives were lost in fires.

Mr McAlpine said the site of the building was ideal for it was near the junction of two roads, giving a quick exit, and because it overlooked the river there was no chance of it being built out. There was no problem from parked cars. The help and co-operation of the Ministry of Works and the Fire Service Council in the preparation of the station was mentioned by the chairman of the Fire Board (Mr W R. Campbell). Mr Campbell told the firemen that although the Fire Board had differences with them, they could be assured of its support while they were giving a proper and efficient service.

Other speakers were the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning), the member of Parliament for Christchurch Central (Mr R. M. Macfarlane), and the chairman of the Fire Service Council (Mr S S. Dean).

They all expressed satisfaction at the standard of the new building and said that they were certain the Brigade would continue to provide its service of protection to the community.
