Unemployment Leaps In U.K.

LONDON, August 24. Unemployment in Britain increased sharply between mid*July and the middle of this month to a total of 464,191, the highest recorded in August since statistics were first prepared on the present basis 14 years ago, “The Times” reported.
The newspaper said the increase—nearly 64.000 —was the greatest in a single month since the recession winter of 1958-59, and had been exceeded only once or twice in the history of that series cf statistics.

But there was a marked increase in other unemployed. If school leaver# and temporary unemployed were excluded from the total, the number out of work had risen by 21.180 to 391.839. The usual increase at that time of the year was about 9000, it said.
