Accident In France
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) EPINAL (France), August 24. Seven tannery workers were dead and two others in critical condition today after a chainreaction disaster in a 10ft pit at Thillot yesterday. Police said one man climbed down into the tannery pit. where hides are normally soaked, to clean it, the Associated Press reported. He was overcome by fumes, and another worker weni down to help. The second man was also overcome, and a third man went down, then a fourth man, and so on. When the rescue squad arrived nine men were lying in the pit. Six were dead, and the seventh died early today in a hospital.

Belgium Dairy Prices Low

August 23. Belgian peasants brandishing pitchforks today battled wiih riot police who hurled tear-gas grenades at them. Two peasants were slightly injured and about 150 arrested in the clash which was over low dairy prices and the smuggling of butter into Belgium from Holland, where it is cheaper. The mass demonstration, which included a procession of slogan-bearing tractors, was orderly but when it ended a number of younger demonstrators overturned a wine merchant’s van and the battle started.
