Painting For King
An oil painting of Mount Cook and the Tasman Glacier by Austen Deans, a Canterbury artist, was presented to the King and Queen of Thailand by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) at the civic receotion yesterday. In return. King Bhumibol gave the Mayor a Silver cigarette box. which he said was an example of Thai craftsmansih-iip, and suggested that it would grace the Mayor's table. Of the painting. His Majesty said: “It will remind us of the beautiful South Island. It is most appropriate, for something like this is hard to find. It is the sight of the mountains through the eye of an artist." Lord Cobham HI (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Aug. 24. The Governor - General (Lord Cobham) is suffering from acute bronchitis and has cancelled his week-end engagements. His two main engagements were attendance at the Rugby test match between New Zealand and Australia in Wellington on Saturday and the farewelling of the King and Queen of Thailand from Christchurch airport on Sunday when they leave for Australia.
