Double-Unit Trailers

Sir.—The Road Safety Committee recently decided brakes should be fitted to the rear trailer when a car was towing a van and a boat trailer. How stupid! Boat trailers are generally fully submerged in salt water; hence mechanism would quickly become corroded. Wet drums and linings would need miles of travel to dry out and operate; oil washed from bearings on to linings would render brakes ineffective. Further, the only brakes I envisage for a third vehicle would be the override type—most ineffective on a light trailer and boat. Abolish blue lights, yes; on the modern low-set car they cannot be seen for headlight glare. White marker lights could be mistaken at night; and perhaps amber would be better. Could figures be published of the New Zealand accident rate involving private cars towing two trailers? Is there much ado about nothing?— Yours, etc., SAFACRAFT. August 23, 1962.
