BUILDING FOR PARKING

Loan Welcomed By Businessmen

“It is most encouraging to learn that the Local Authorities Loans Board has sanctioned the City Council's loan for the off-street parking building on the corner of Manchester and Gloucester streets,” said Mr P. M. McShane, president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, yesterday. Business people had shared the council's concern at the delay in obtaining approval, he said, and were glad that the waiting had ended. “We know the council- will do everything possible to expedite approval of the plan by the Ministry of Works and the Regional Planning Authority so that the project can go ahead immediately," he continued. “This building marks real progress in the city, and the business community now looks forward to an early start on plans for the Lichfield street building and, later, other off-street parking buildings in the city.” Mr Mac Shane said that businessmen would bear in mind the remarks of Cr. W. P. Glue when he said: “We will not be satisfied until there are off-street parking facilities in every block." Cr. Glue had been backed up by Cr. H. P. Smith and the chairman of the council's off-street parking committee (Cr. H. G. Hay). Mr MacShane said, “and we warmly commend them on their progressive outlook on an important issue.”
