WITHDRAWAL OF TROOPS

WELLINGTON, Aug. 23.
“I can confirm the report that the Government is considering the withdrawal of the SAS. troops from Thailand,” said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake* at his press conference early this afternoon
Mr Holyoake said the attached 41 Transport Squadron would be remaining for the time being. The Prime Minister said he had discussed the matter with the Prime Minister of Thailand (Marshal Sarit Thanarat) a few days ago Mr Holyoake said he could not give a date for the withdrawal. as the troops had begun a valuable training exercise with United States troops. The exercise might last three weeks. Replying to questions. Mr H ilyoake agreed that the withdrawal could be taken as a sign of easing of tension hi the area. He said that he had no idea whether other countries with troops in Thailand were considering the withdrawal of their forces.
