33 Years With Radio (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Aug. 23. About 2000 people packed the Auckland Town Hall tonight for a public concert and farewell to Mr T. T. Garland, known throughout New Zealand as “Uncle Tom” of the Friendly Road radio sessions Mr Garland, who is 86, will make his final broadcast with the Sankey Singers on Sunday after 33 years of service. Messages were read from the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake). the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash), the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Kinsella), and many others. Mr Garland, who refused to accept tonight's proceeds and gave them toward an annual prize for children’s choirs in the Auckland competitions. was presented with two armchairs and a washing machine.
