PROTEST FROM RESIDENTS

Drainage Board Loan

“Persons in the PapanuiStyx area and other metropolitan areas who are in urgent need of sewer reticulation will note with amazement and concern the statement of the chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Board (Mr F R. Price) that permission has been granted for an office building loan of £190.000 ” says a statement by Mr W. T. Rice.

Mr Rice, the chairman of the North Papanui-Styx Reticulation and Drainage Action Committee, said the loan was £4O 000 more than the amount which the board told the public it was applying for. “Apart from this staggering deception, the chairman of the board has mis-stated, deliberately or otherwise, the motion carried at the first protest meeting regarding the office building loan.

“Our motion was not as Mr Price suggests, that the building should wait until all unsewered areas were sewered, but until all urgent sewerage commitments were completed. By leaving out the word urgent, Mr Price manages to distort the reasonable intention of those members of the general public who saw fit to record a serious protest primarily on grounds of public health,” says the statement. 'ln the public interest it is hoped that the Christchurch Drainage Board will permit the local committee now sifting the evidence for reorganisation of local government in the Christchurch metropolitan area, to present its recommendations before irrevocable steps are taken,” Mr Rice said.
