CONSUMER SERVICE

36,000 Members

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 22.

The Consumer Service now had a membership of 36.000, and was enjoying a most energetic growth, the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) told the House of Representatives during a discussion on the estimates of his department. Mr H. E. L. Pickering (Government, Hurunui) said that the council was doing a very good job in testing goods, but he wished its work were more widely known. Good industries had to be protected when they were new, he said, but if there were to be protection for the producer, there should also be protection for the consumer.

Mr Marshall commended membership of the council to all members of the House and noted that Miss M. B. Howard (Opposition, Sydenham) was now a member. Miss Howard inquired what she would get for her membership and Mr Marshall replied that the service would include the quarterly magazine. Sir Basil Arthur (Opposition. Timaru): Why should the consumer have to pay for protection?

Mr Marshall said he looked forward to the time w'hen the council could function without Government support.
