Sir, —What the Rev. L. N. Morris is up against is not any of the evil’s he refers to as such, of which most weldbalanced people are well aware; but the encrusted hypocrisy which wrecked the efforts cf the Social Hygiene Society, and which nullified all the efforts of such outstanding church men as the late Archbishop Julius, and of the late Bishop Cleary of Auckianl. Havelock Ellis deals very pungently with 'this complex subject in his “Task Of Social Hygiene ” Ellis’s observation is that though we have broken through the silence we have not broken through the conspiracy which grew up in it. I could also refer to my own wasted efforts in the 20’s and 30’s; but enough for the present.—Yours, etc..
R. M. THOMSON. August 21. 1962.
Common Market Sir, —With the idiosyncrasies of the policies followed by France in Algeria, the Belgians in the Congo, the Dutch in West Irian, East Germany over the Berlin Wall, Britain in her colonies, no wonder Mr W. Rosenberg can quote a drop in the gross national products in some of the European Community nations. This will be merely temporary. While a layman like myself hesitates to clash with eminent economic authorities. we cannot ignore that with Britain’s participation she is merely giving support to slogans such as "Unity is strength." The recent huge drop in profits of the 1.C.1. has sent the experts to work to seek and cut out dead wood of business and economic inefficiency. My forecast suggests that Canada will co-operate with America, while New Zealand and Australia will be forced to realise the geographical disunity of. the Commonwealth and mould policies accordingly.— Yours, etc.,
RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru, August 21, 1962.
