LEAGUE Big Auckland Win Against Britain

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 13. The Auckland Rugby League team registered the biggest victory by a New Zealand side over an overseas touring team when it beat the depleted British side, 46-13, at Carlaw Park today. Fielding eight forwards and five backs—the only fit men available—Great Britain never looked a winning combination and trailed 17-3 at half-time.

Auckland scored seven of its 12 tries in the second half to add 29 points. It was the third successive Auckland victory over a touring international side. In 1960 it defeated France, 14-5, and last year Australia, 13-8.

■ the interval, when it added three quick tries. With two minutes to go Auckland had a great chance of reaching 50 points when Snowden received the ball about 20 yards from the visitors’ line with an open field, but he dropped the ball. Denton (3>. Eliwood (2>. Bailey (2). Snowden. Reidy Harrison, Mattson and Sorensen scored tries for Auckland. Phillips kicked four conversions and Sorensen kicked a conversion.

Both sides threw the ball around freely but the defence on both sides was weak. “What could you expect from a team of crocks," said Mr S. Hadfield, the manager of the tourists, commenting on the match. The teams were:—

For England Poynton (2) and Small scored tries. Fox kicked a conversion and a penalty goal.

The tourists again suffered injuries during the match. Noble received a kick on the knee which forced him to hobble around for the second half and Wilkinson was slowed down considerably from a kick in the back. Strangely enough it was not .he injured players who let Britain down. They played as well as they could. It was lack of determination by the fit players who did not seem to put their full effort into the game which cost them the match. Unexpectedly, the Auckland forwards rose to the occasion and outplayed their more experienced opponents. A former Kiwi full-back, Phillips, was in good form and always managed to make ground. Denton had a good day and the hero of the second test, B. T. fleidy, was again in grand form. Britain shifted the hooker, Shaw, from the second row to the wing at half-time and brought the world-class second-row forward, Huddart, from centre to the forwards. Gilfedder, the wing, moved into centre.

This change gave Huddart a chance to stand out more, but Shaw was far too slow to mark the speedy Denton and the Kiwi raced around him for three tries. Huddart was the best forward for the tourists and the half-back, Small, was outstanding in the backs. He tried hard and was energetic. He scored one of the visitors’ tries and sent Poynton in for another after a good break. Poynton stood out and finished with two tries to his credit. Sayer played soundly at hooker.

Auckland opened the scoring and were eight points up after two quick tries by Ellwood and Snowden. Auckland had little trouble in gaining a 17-3 lead at halftime and increased this to 28-3 within 10 minutes after
