LATE SCHOOL TRAIN
Technical College
Comment
There would be no problem, when the Heathcote to Christchurch train arrived late, if pupils on it attended the Technical College, said Mr F. H. Dephoff at a meeting of the board of managers of the college last evening. He was commenting on a recent statement by the headmaster of the Hillmorton High School (Mr O. W. G. Lewis), that the train came late most mornings, and was a potential danger to children who had to rush to catch a bus. There was no need for pupils from Lyttelton and Heathcote to attend the Hillmorton High School when there was plenty of room at the Technical College, said Mr Dephoff The Technical College offered the same edu. cation, and was right opposite the railway station. Proposed zoning of schools in Christchurch had never been received with great favour, said the principal (Mr D. W Lyall There was a continual criss-crossing of schoolchildren every morning across the city, and it would be difficult for the college to lay claim to any zone, since most of the pupils attending probably passed other schools on their way. fc ought to be the choice of the parents, said the chairman (Mr R. Jones).
Mr Dephoff: And let the children spend half the day in travelling? Mr Jones: Yes. that's democracy.
