Children At The Theatre

Sir, —I too was a member of the audience at “Macbeth" on the same night as “Appreciative” and, being one of the school “children,” I feel some of his statements require correction. He writes of us as a group, suggesting every one of us was “bored” and “reciting the wellknown soliloquies.” Perhaps he was not near our school group, however. There was only a very small minority who acted as he describes, and the remainder were just as disgusted as he was. With the large amount of influenza that is prevalent and with the cramped and stifling position many of us were in. then a certain amount of restlessness was inevitable He is full of praise for the performance, and it was excellent in places. I would suggest, however, that the inaudibility of some of the players, and. together with the acting of the play as if it were a thriller, were contributing factors to the misbehaviour of a small section of the audience.—Yours, etc., DAVID G. DAWSON. August 5, 1962.
