In the early stages, the scratch men did not settle down and a lot ot time was lost over the first haif cxf the journey. With two scratchings from the scratch mark this bunch was reduced to six and just past Rakaia only B. Berry, K. Jeffery (Christchurch), and T. G. Lankow (Wanganui) were left. These three had to work very hard over the concluding stages of the race and rode swiftly for the second half. After giving away six minutes to the break bunch they were holding time at Rakaia by one minute five seconds. A little further on the seven break riders were depleted to two, R. H. Bush (Papanui) and B. F. Manning (Blenheim). These two rode exceptionally well, but their chances of gamins time on the scratch men were almost impossible and within two miles of the finish they were only three minutes twenty seconds ahead of the scratch men. Entering Hinds, the leaders were G. McGregor (Christchurch), J. Mobbs (Avon), and M. H. Gibson (Timaru), but on the run to Ashburton Gibson was dropped and McGregor won the sprint at Ashburton. Mobbs and McGregor did not hold the lead for long, for two miles past Ashburton they were gathered in by the 33 and 37 minute riders. The two leaders dropped a lot of ground and just past Rakaia they were one minute five seconds behind the scratch men. The leading bunch then comprised 12 riders with another big bunch of 17 chasing Selwyn and Rolleston the leading bunch was closely followed by riders who had broken away and at about

Islington these riders linked with the leaders to make a bunch of 15. In the final sprint Halewood was holding the lead when he led out for a very long sprint ot over 200 yards. He kept the Sressure on, but nearing the ne it appeared as if Hill was going to overhaul him. but a determined final bid by Halewood gave him the decision by the finest of margins. In the final sprint for time honours Jeffery proved to be the strongest and gained fastest time. Lankow, who, during the race, put in some fine bursts when taking a lap. tried hard to shake oft Jeffery and Berry, but his efforts were unsuccessful.
